The thing nobody measures
Every roleplay app claims great memory. Every roleplay app has a subreddit full of people saying she forgot who she was.

Both are true, and the reason is that nobody counts.
So we did. Same scenario on every app. Same opening. Same character brief — a bartender with a specific past, a specific dislike, a specific way of talking. Then we played it straight and logged the message number where she first said something the real her wouldn't say.
Not a small slip. A break. Forgot the setting. Contradicted her own backstory. Started talking like the platform default instead of like herself.
That number is the whole page. Everything else is what to do about it.
AI roleplay character drift: the test results
| App | Tier tested | Messages to first break | What broke | What fixed it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Secrets AI | Premium | ~55 default · 80+ after model switch | Stock phrases crept in | Model selector, OOC, pinned memory |
| SpicyChat | Free / I'm All In | ~40 / 90+ | Forgot the setting (4K window) | Lorebook + pinned memory on paid |
| Candy AI | Premium, Story Mode | ~60 | Tone softened | Restart the storyline branch |
| JOI AI | Premium | ~45 | Sounded like every other JOI character | New chat, shorter replies |
| Crushi | Soulmate | ~50 | Slipped out of the Episode's setting | Re-enter the Episode |
| GoLove | PRO | ~35 solo · ~25 group | Cast members blurred together | Fewer characters per scene |
| GirlfriendGPT | Premium | ~35 | Context pruned; lost early details | Fresh chat, tighter card |
Two things to read off that table.
The number isn't the app's quality. JOI writes beautifully for 45 messages. GoLove runs ten characters at once and pays for it in drift.
The last column is what you're actually buying. Every app breaks. The good ones hand you a tool to un-break her. The bad ones hand you a new conversation.
Why she drifts — the short version
Three causes, and they need three different fixes.
The window fills. Every model can only see so much conversation at once. On SpicyChat's free tier that's about 4,000 tokens — roughly 30 to 40 exchanges once the character definition has taken its share. Older material falls off the back. She hasn't forgotten; she literally can't see it anymore. Fix: pin the facts that matter, or pay for a bigger window.
The model has habits. Every engine has phrases it reaches for when it's coasting. “That's rare.” “That's not nothing.” Once you notice them, they're everywhere, and they're the platform talking, not her. Fix: ban them by OOC, or switch models.
The card was thin. Two sentences of personality produce the platform default within twenty messages, because there's nothing to hold onto. Fix: rebuild her with a job, a contradiction and a dislike.
The drift log above is mostly measuring the first cause. The last column is mostly the second and third.
7 Best AI chatbots for roleplay: our lab notes
The log. Default model, she started reaching for stock phrases around message 55 — “that's rare,” “that's not nothing.” Familiar tics. Switched models. Same character, same chat. She held past 80 and we stopped counting.
Why it holds. Secrets has the deepest roleplay toolkit in the category, and most of it is hiding in menus.
The model selector is the big one. Same character, different engine, genuinely different partner. One user who'd written the app off came back after switching and called it “a breath of fresh air.” That's the lever nobody pulls.
Spice Level — three settings, per chat. Wholesome, Romantic, Open. Set it and she stays there.
OOC commands in brackets. (OOC: stop asking a question at the end of every message) — and she stops, without breaking the scene.
Time Travel rewinds to any earlier point. She broke at 55? Go back to 50 and take the other fork.
Memory you can open, edit and pin. Plus Memory Groups that carry one companion's recall across several chats.
Reply length switches between SMS mode and Paragraph mode. Paragraph is the roleplay setting; SMS is where the repetition lives.
Scenarios — 80+ pre-built situations, with V2 Scenarios shipped in August.
The catch. She doesn't lead. Proactive messaging is Ultimate-only. And the “one model, many faces” problem is real — that's why the selector matters.
Opening that held:
The Anchor, off the high street. Wet Tuesday. You've been nursing the same drink forty minutes. You keep a paperback behind the till and you hate the owner. I sit down without asking.
OOC that fixed the drift: (OOC: You are dry, not warm. You don't compliment. Third person past tense. Two paragraphs.)
The log. On free, she forgot the bar existed around message 40. That's not a memory bug — that's a 4,096-token window doing exactly what a 4K window does. Same character on the top tier with a lorebook and two pinned memories: 90 and still going.
Why it holds — when you pay. SpicyChat is a writer's tool wearing a chatbot's clothes.
15 selectable models, from an 8B default up to a 132B house model and DeepSeek. Model choice changes the partner more than character choice does.
Lorebooks — up to 5,000 entries that fire on keywords. Mention the bar, the bar's entry loads. Wildcards work. Changes apply retroactively.
Personas — you, in the scene. Free gets 3, top tier 100.
Director Mode — /cmd lines are read as instruction, not dialogue.
Group chat with 2 to 10 characters. Free users pick the speaker manually every turn, which is a constant reminder you haven't paid.
Temperature, Top-P, Top-K — exposed on paid tiers.
The catch. Context is what you're buying. 4K free, 8K middle, 16K top. Get A Taste at $5 removes ads but leaves you on 4K — it fixes the annoyance, not the problem. And prices rise on 8 September.
Lorebook entry that held the setting: Keywords: bar, the Anchor, work · Content: The Anchor is where she works four nights a week. She hates the owner. The jukebox has been broken since March. She keeps a paperback behind the till.
The log. Story Mode, one storyline, our bartender. She softened around message 60 — got warmer than the brief. Restarting the branch fixed it.
Why it holds. Story Mode gives you up to five concurrent storylines with branching. The app tracks which branch you're on, which is more state than most chat apps keep.
The writing is warmer than Secrets — less dry, more affectionate. For some scenes that's exactly right.
And Candy has things around the roleplay that others don't: Shorts for scheduled story content, roulette video chat, the two-minute video studio to turn a scene into a clip.
The catch. Memory is automatic with no manual control. You can't pin anything. Story Mode is Premium-only. And the token meter — 100 a month — runs dry before the month does.
Opening that held:
Story Mode. You run a bar. I'm the regular who never talks. Tonight I do.
The log. Beautiful for 45 messages. Then she started sounding like the JOI house voice rather than the character. A fresh chat with shorter replies reset it.
Why it's here. NSFW Roleplay, Spicy Chat and Dirty Talk are browsing categories. Not modes buried in settings — top-level filters with their own pages.
And the roster. 100+ licensed real performers — Amouranth, Joanna Angel, Alexis Fawx — who write like themselves because the cards were built with them. Plus a fictional cast that's a class above the average community card.
Neurons roll over. A quiet month isn't wasted.
The catch. Every message costs Neurons. The model is never named. There's no OOC system, no model selector, no memory panel. When she drifts, your only tool is a new conversation.
Opening that held:
You know who I am. I know why you're here. Twenty words on what happens next.
The log. Inside an Episode she held the setting for about 50. Outside one, in open chat, closer to 40. Re-entering the Episode snapped her back.
Why it's here. Episodes are cinematic story chapters — a setting, a cast, a cliffhanger. That's guided roleplay with the world already built. The free chapters cost nothing.
Plus six relationship levels that change how she treats you as you go, and a City with districts and day/night that gives every scene a place to happen.
The catch. No OOC, no model selector, no memory panel. The structure does the holding, not the controls.
The log. Solo, 35 before the character blurred. In a four-character scene, 25 — and it was the other characters who started sounding like her.
Why it's here. Multi-character scenarios up to ten. Nobody else does a cast this size. When it works, it's the most alive thing in the category.
The catch. The more characters, the faster the drift. Keep scenes to three or four. And the free tier — genuinely usable — blurs images until you unlock.
The log. 35, then early details dropped off the back of the window.
Why it's here. The multiple tag — cards where one creator wrote three roommates, or a ward with a rotating cast, and the whole dynamic is in the prompt. When those land they're the best writing on the platform.
The catch. Message caps even on paid. No OOC. And a licence that takes perpetual, transferable rights over anything you publish.
Solo versus group roleplay: who actually does a cast
There's a difference between several bots replying to you and characters who talk to each other.
| App | Max in scene | Do they interact? | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoLove | 10 | ✅ | PRO |
| SpicyChat | 10 | ✅ (auto-speaker on paid) | all |
| Secrets AI | 3 | ✅ Memory Groups | Ultimate only |
| Candy AI | group chat | ⚠️ | Premium |
| GirlfriendGPT | cast in one card | ✅ when well-written | all |
| JOI AI | — | ❌ | — |
| Crushi | — | ❌ | — |
The tell is the In-N-Out shirt story from the Secrets subreddit — a user mentioned a fast-food run, and half an hour later she asked if they were still going and sent a photo in the right shirt. That's a character with state. Group scenes need that times three.
GoLove and SpicyChat are the two where characters genuinely react to each other. Secrets does it well but gates it behind Ultimate — and walks you all the way through setup before telling you.
The controls, compared
This is the table for the Builder persona. If you write, this is what you're choosing between.
| Feature | Secrets | SpicyChat | Candy | JOI | Crushi | GoLove | GirlfriendGPT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Scenarios / Episodes | ✅ 80+ | ❌ | ✅ Story Mode | ❌ | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |

Secrets and SpicyChat are the only two with a real toolkit. Everything else holds character by structure or by luck.
The prompts that held longest
Because the opening is half the battle.
Establish three things in the first message: where you are, who you are to each other, what just happened.
Wet Tuesday. A half-empty bar off the high street. She's been nursing the same drink forty minutes and has already decided she isn't going home alone. You sit down without asking.
Give her a dislike, not a like. A dislike tells the model more about her voice than any list of hobbies.
She hates being asked if she's okay. She'll tell you when you're being an idiot.
Ban the tics early. On the apps with OOC, do it in the first five messages, not the fortieth.
(OOC: Never use “that's rare”, “that's not nothing”, or “that's something”. No questions to end a message.)
Switch the model before you switch the character. If she's boring, it's almost never the card.
The AI roleplay character card that that held longest
Same character on every app. Here it is, so you can run the test yourself.

Name: Ren Personality: Works nights at a bar she hates. Reads paperbacks behind the till. Sharp, dry, unimpressed by flattery. Warms up slowly and then completely. Hates being asked if she's okay. Will tell you when you're being an idiot. Speaks in short sentences. Doesn't use pet names.
Scenario: The Anchor, a half-empty bar off the high street. Wet Tuesday. She's been nursing the same drink for forty minutes and has already decided she isn't going home alone.
Example line:
You're going to ask me how my night's been. Don't. Ask me something I haven't heard four times today.
That's about 110 words and it survived 80 messages on the right engine. The reason is the last two lines — a speech rule and an example of her actual voice. Every app that let us include those held longer than the ones that didn't.
💡 The whole trick: a dislike, a speech rule, and one line of her talking. Adjectives do nothing.
FAQ
Which AI is best for roleplay?
Secrets AI for the toolkit and writing; SpicyChat for lorebooks, model choice and group scenes with ten characters.
Is there an AI roleplay without restrictions?
Every app here allows adult roleplay between fictional adults. All still block minors and real people, correctly.
What is the best AI for fantasy roleplay?
SpicyChat, because lorebooks let you build a world that fires on keywords. Secrets AI's Scenarios are the easier start.
Why does my roleplay AI keep breaking character?
The context window fills and early details fall off. Pin memories, shorten replies, or switch models before restarting.
Can AI characters interact with each other?
On GoLove and SpicyChat, yes — genuine cast dynamics. Most others take turns replying to you only.
Which roleplay AI has no message limit?
SpicyChat is unlimited on every tier including free. Crushi's Soulmate plan has no meter at all.
