The thing nobody explains: you're buying memory, not messages
Here's the single most misunderstood spec on this platform, and it's the one that decides whether you'll be happy.
There is no message limit on any tier. Including free. You can chat all day for nothing.
What the money buys is context — how much of the conversation the model can actually see.
| Tier | Context | Max reply |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 4,096 tokens | 180 |
| Get A Taste | 4,096 | 180 |
| True Supporter | 8,192 | 300 |
| I'm All In | 16,384 | 300 |
And that budget covers everything — the character's personality, the scenario, the example dialogue, your persona, any lorebook entries that fired, and the conversation itself.
In practice: a well-written character eats roughly 900 to 1,100 tokens before you type a word. On a 4K window that leaves you around 30 to 40 exchanges before the oldest material starts falling off the back.
That's why the reviews are full of people saying it forgets. It isn't broken. It's a 4,096-token ceiling doing exactly what a 4,096-token ceiling does.
💡 The practical read: Get A Taste at $5 removes ads but leaves you on 4K, which means it fixes the annoyance and not the problem. True Supporter is the first tier that actually changes the experience — and it's the one taking the 33% rise. If memory matters to you, that's the buy, this week.
32K has been announced as coming. No date.
Finding a SpicyChat character worth your time
Two hundred thousand characters is a lot of doors, and most of them open onto nothing.

There's no editorial layer here. Nobody at SpicyChat picks a character of the week. What you get instead is sort order, and knowing which one to use is half the skill.
Trending is a popularity contest that runs about a week behind whatever got posted to the subreddit. Fine for finding what everyone else is talking about, useless for finding something that suits you.
Most popular is worse — it surfaces the same fifty cards that have been on top for a year.
The sort that actually works is tags, with exclusions on. SpicyChat lets you filter out tags as well as in, which almost nothing else does. Two included, three excluded, and the list drops from 200,000 to something you can read.

Characters carry 2 to 12 tags and a minimum of 2 is enforced, so the taxonomy is at least populated. NSFW and SFW shelving is decided automatically by the system rather than by the creator — and here's a wrinkle worth knowing: an SFW-shelved character will still go anywhere you take her. The flag decides where she appears on the front page. It does not decide what she'll do.
⚠️ One thing that has genuinely got worse. Long-time users report characters vanishing without notice, including cards removed over the source material they were based on. One thread title from earlier this year sums up the mood:
SpicyChat has since added human review of edits, specifically to cut post-publish removals. Whether that has worked is too early to call.
The first month
Week one is admin, and I'd rather warn you than pretend otherwise.

You arrive, you're on 4K context whether you've paid £5 or nothing, and the first two evenings go on working out which of two hundred thousand cards is worth opening. Nobody helps you. There's no onboarding, no taste quiz, no shelf of six good ones.
Then you find a well-built character and it clicks properly. The writing on the top-tier cards is a step above what curated apps produce, because a hobbyist with an obsession will always out-write a content team on a deadline.
The honest summary: SpicyChat has a bad first week and an excellent second month. That's the opposite shape to most apps in this category, and it's why the review scores online are so scattered. People who left on day three and people who stayed for a year are describing genuinely different products.
The models

Fifteen of them, tier-gated. This is the widest selectable lineup in the category and it's the reason serious roleplayers stay.
| Model | Size | Gate |
|---|---|---|
| SpicyChat Default · TheSpice | 8B | Everyone |
| Stheno · Magnum 12B | 8–12B | Get A Taste |
| Lyra 12B V4 · Shimizu 24B · Mixtral 8x7B · Noromaid | 12–45B | True Supporter |
| DarkForest V3 · Euryale 70B · Midnight Rose 70B · Magnum 72B | 20–70B | I'm All In |
| WizardLM-2 8x22B · SpicyXL (132B) · DeepSeek V3 | 141B–671B | I'm All In |
And there are more than that list admits. Users are actively running DeepSeek V4, V4 Pro and GLM 5.1 right now — models that don't appear in any official table. The lineup moves faster than the documentation.
Which matters most? Model choice, more than character choice. Same card, different model, completely different partner. One user described the V4 switch as the thing that saved the app for them.
Sampling controls — temperature (0–1.5), Top-P, Top-K, reply length — are True Supporter and above. Free users get whatever they're given.
💡 My settings after a month: temperature around 0.85 for roleplay, Top-P 0.75, reply tokens maxed. Default 0.7 is a bit obedient.
Lorebooks — the actual killer feature
If you've only ever used a companion app, this will be new. It's the difference between a chatbot and a world.
A lorebook is a set of entries that only load when their keywords appear. Mention the tavern, the tavern entry fires. Don't mention it, it costs you nothing.
The specs:
And here's the paywall, which is cleverer than a feature lock. Creating lorebooks is free. What's gated is how much room they get:
| Tier | Lorebook budget |
|---|---|
| Free | ~740 tokens |
| True Supporter | ~1,600 |
| I'm All In | ~3,080 |
On free that's roughly one entry's worth of useful world. On the top tier you can run an actual setting.
The catch: entries can't trigger other entries. No chaining. Build flat, not nested.
Second catch: the official docs say lorebooks are private-only and unshareable. The app has public lorebook browsing and favouriting. The docs are behind the product — trust what you see on screen.
Group chat

Manual selection isn't unusable. It is, however, a constant reminder that you haven't paid.
Voice
I'm All In only — the $29.95 tier.
It's output only. You press play on a message and hear it. There's no voice input, no talking back, no calls.

What redeems it: no usage limit at all, and voice cloning. You can hold 20 custom voices on an account, built from 3 clips of 5 to 30 seconds each, 4MB total. Around ten seconds per clip is the sweet spot.
There's also a Narration Mode that reads the action text and the prose, audiobook style. For long-form roleplay it's genuinely lovely.
⚠️ One consequence people miss: attach a custom voice to a public character and everyone who uses that character hears your clone.
Images — the weak spot
This is where the 6.4 comes from.
The model is DreamShaper-8 — a Stable Diffusion 1.5 fine-tune. SD 1.5 is from 2022. Everyone else in this category has moved to Flux or something newer.

It only works inside chat. There's no standalone generator, no gallery, no prompt panel. You tap an icon after a reply and it makes something from the conversation.
The tier gating is unusually stingy:
There's an NSFW toggle in the image settings and it does what it says.
And SpicyChat says the quiet part themselves — the generator has no specialised prompt handling, struggles with character diversity, and
That last one is the whole problem in one line.
There is no video. At all.
If pictures are why you're here, this is the wrong app. Go and read the Promptchan review or the Secrets AI review instead.
Building a character
This is where the 9.0 lives.

Prompts and settings that actually work
There's no image prompting to speak of, so this is about steering the writing.
To kill the stock phrases — every model in this category has tics — use Director Mode:
/cmd Never end a message with a question. Do not use the phrases "that's rare" or "something shifts". Stay in third-person past tense.
To set a scene properly, put it in Scenario, not in the greeting:
A wet Tuesday in a half-empty bar off the high street. She's been nursing the same drink for forty minutes and has already decided she isn't going home alone. She is sharp, unimpressed by flattery, and interested in whether you can keep up.
To fix pacing, cap the reply length and raise the temperature slightly. Long replies at low temperature is where the repetition lives.
To make a lorebook earn its budget, write entries that are facts, not prose:
Keywords: bar, the Anchor, work Content: The Anchor is where she works four nights a week. She hates the owner. The jukebox has been broken since March. She keeps a paperback behind the till.
Four facts, forty tokens, fires only when relevant. That's the whole craft.
The free tier, honestly
Better than most, and worse than it looks.

Still — for a category where free tiers are usually twenty messages and a paywall, unlimited-but-slow is a real offer.
What you sign away — 5.4 🔒
I'd want someone to tell me this before I spent a month building characters, so here it is.
Publish anything on SpicyChat and the rights you grant are, in their own words:
And it doesn't stop at the character. The same grant extends to
— the conversations themselves.
What creators get in return: a monthly leaderboard. Top 3 in each category win a free I'm All In. Places 4 to 10 win a free True Supporter.
That's it. No revenue share. No tipping. No payouts of any kind. Ever.
I want to be fair — it's a real competition, people genuinely win it, and one user confirmed picking up a month of True Supporter for placing sixth. But set it against 200,000 characters built for free under a perpetual transferable licence, and the arithmetic speaks for itself.
If you're building here, build for fun. Not for equity.
Privacy, billing and cancelling
Age verification is real, and better than the category norm: In the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states, you go through a third-party check — video selfie or ID with face matching. SpicyChat never sees the documents; the partner returns a yes or no. Everywhere else it's a click-through.
Most rivals do the click-through everywhere. Credit where it's due.
Your chats are private from creators: Explicitly: nothing you send or receive is visible to the person who made the character. That's worth saying because plenty of people assume otherwise.
Payment is unusually flexible: Cards, Pay By Bank (one-time, doesn't auto-renew), Boosty, SubscribeStar, and crypto via CoinPayments at a dedicated checkout. Crypto clears in around six hours.
There's also a workaround worth knowing: PixelChat, their SFW sister app, is on Google Play, and a PixelChat subscription applies to your SpicyChat account on the same email. That's how you pay with Google Pay or PayPal.
The Statement Test — unresolved: With five payment rails in play the descriptor almost certainly varies. Nothing is published. Check your first statement.

Refunds: are handled directly, issued within ten days of an approved request.
Deletion is permanent — accounts can't be restored, though you can re-register with the same email.
Trustpilot: 2.0 out of 5 from 61 reviews. 54% one star: I'm not going to soften that. The complaints cluster on three things: memory, response coherence, and inconsistent moderation. A sample:
That said — read them against the context table above. A large share of the memory complaints are people on 4K windows discovering what 4K means.
Apps

No iOS app. Apple removed it for guideline violations; installed copies stopped working in September 2025 and the appeal was described by SpicyChat themselves as having “very low” chances. iOS users install the web app to the home screen.
No Google Play listing either. Android is a sideloaded APK from their site.
Discord is the real support channel — moderation staffed around the clock, and it's where appeals go. The subreddit runs to 62,400 members and staff post there.

Nine languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Korean.

Verdict
SpicyChat is a writer's tool wearing a chatbot's clothes.
Nothing else in this category gives you fifteen selectable models, a 5,000-entry lorebook system, ten-bot group scenes, temperature and Top-P controls, pinnable memories and unlimited messages on a flat fee. If you want to build a world and live in it, this is the best-equipped platform on the market and the 9.0 on Customisation is not generous.
It's also running a Stable Diffusion 1.5 image generator in 2026, has no video, was thrown off both app stores, sits at 2.0 on Trustpilot, and takes a perpetual transferable licence on everything you make while paying you in free subscriptions.
Those two paragraphs describe the same product. Which one matters depends entirely on whether you came here to read or to look.
And there's a clock. True Supporter was $14.95 until 8 September and $19.95 now. That tier is the first one that fixes the memory, it's taking the biggest rise, and the grandfathered rate evaporates the moment you change plan.
If you want this, want it this week.
