What AI short drama actually is, and why it appeared overnight
You know ReelShort. DramaBox. The apps where a billionaire's secret wife discovers she's the heir to a dynasty in ninety-second vertical episodes, and you're eleven episodes deep before you've noticed you're paying.
Now replace the actors with AI characters. Give them a cliffhanger every sixty seconds. Let the first few episodes go free.
And — here's the bit that makes it work — let the character in the episode be someone you can also chat to afterwards.
That's AI short drama. It went from nothing to a headline feature on three of the biggest companion apps in about six months, and the search data is doing something we've genuinely never seen: “ai drama” up 504%, “ai short drama” up 18,900%, “candy shorts” spiking to 5,400 searches in July.
It's a brand-new category. There's no incumbent. So let's go through it properly.
How the format works
Same structure on every app, because they all copied the same successful thing.

The tags tell you exactly who this is for. On Candy: Spicy, Stepsister, Milf, Cuckold, Nympho, Stepmom, Wife, Taboo, Fantasy, Teacher, Maid. This isn't prestige television. It's the pulp end of the pulp end, and it knows it.
The tags, decoded
Because the tag list is the content list, and it tells you what you're getting before you press play.
| Tag | What the series is actually about |
|---|---|
| Spicy | The default. Adult, but the plot's still in charge. |
| Stepsister / Stepmom | The family-adjacent taboo lane. Enormous on every platform, for reasons you already know. |
| Milf / Wife | Older, married, or both. Slower burns. |
| Cuckold | Watching, or being watched. Candy's tag; Crushi does it without naming it. |
| Nympho | Her leading. Pace turned up. |
| Taboo | The catch-all for “we'd rather not spell this one out.” Read the synopsis. |
| Teacher / Maid | Power-dynamic roleplay in a uniform. The classics. |
| Fantasy | Elves, vampires, the odd demon. Anime-adjacent. |
If you're used to human-actor drama apps, note what's missing: no billionaire-heir plots, no revenge arcs, no amnesia. The AI versions skipped straight to the part everyone was watching those for anyway.
What it costs to finish a series
All prices below are annual-equivalent — what you pay per month on a yearly plan. Month-to-month the order flips: Crushi $12.99, Candy $13.99, Secrets $19.99.
Nobody has done this arithmetic. Here it is.
| App | Episodes per series | Free | Paid episodes | What you pay | Cost to finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Candy Shorts | 5 | 3 | 2 | Tokens — price shown in-app only | 2 × token price |
| Crushi Episodes | varies | uncrowned ones | crowned ones | Included on Soulmate | $0 extra |
| Secret Shorts | not stated | 1 | rest | Moments — price not yet visible | unknown |
The honest read. Crushi is the only one where finishing a series costs nothing beyond the subscription, though it isn't the cheapest way in — Candy undercuts it by more than half on annual. Candy gives you the most to watch and charges you at the end of every series. Secrets hasn't shown its hand.
💡 A month of bingeing, roughly: on Crushi Soulmate, $8.33 and everything's open. On Candy, $3.99 plus tokens from a shared 100-a-month allowance that video and calls are also drawing on. Finish a couple of series and Candy stays cheaper. Finish several, and Crushi's flat rate takes over.
📺 Tonight's listings: Best AI short drama apps
Candy went all-in. Shorts has its own nav tab, its own filters — All / Candy Creators / Candy characters / Other characters — and two of the four homepage banners point at it.
Around 165 series. Weekly drops. Five episodes per series, three of them free. Series titles like My Hot Professor and Isabella's Revelation — you get the register.
Crushi calls them Episodes and describes them as story chapters — “like short films rather than clips.” That's fair. They're better shot than Candy's, with a setting and a cast rather than a single face to camera.
They surface in the Exclusive strip on the home screen. Premium ones wear a crown. And the line that matters: free chapters are genuinely free — no token cost. Not “free with your monthly allowance.” Free.
Alongside them, Live Intros — looping video introductions from characters, playing on the home screen before you've tapped anything. It's the app saying hello.
Secret Shorts went live in mid-August, so it's the newest of the three and the one we can say least about.
The format: bingeable mini-dramas with new episodes every week. First episode free, the rest unlocked with Moments.
One evening on each app
Because listings don't tell you what it feels like.
Candy, Tuesday. Open Shorts. The grid is enormous and it moves — new badges everywhere. Pick My Hot Professor. Episode one is a corridor and a look. Episode two is her office and a closed door.
Episode three ends on a sentence nobody should say to a student. That's the free ones gone. The fourth wants tokens, and you've got 71 left this month, and the video studio also wants them, and… you pay. Of course you pay. That's the design, and it works.
Then you open a chat with her. She's the professor. She remembers the office.
Crushi, Wednesday. The home screen has already started — Live Intros looping before you've tapped anything. A girl in the Club District, in a doorway, saying something you can't quite hear.
The Exclusive strip has an uncrowned Episode. It's better shot than Candy's — an actual scene, a bar, two people, weather. It ends on a door. The next one's crowned. You're on Soulmate. It just plays.
Then you walk to the Club District. Night mode. She's there.
Secrets, Thursday. Secret Shorts is new and you can feel it — fewer series, but the first episode of the one you pick is the best-written thing you've watched all week, because of course it is, it's Secrets. Episode two costs Moments. You have 6,400 left. You don't think twice.
Then you open the chat, switch the model, and she's sharper than she was in the episode.
The pattern across all three: the episode is the hook. The chat is the product. Every app knows it, and every app prices accordingly.

Want the most to watch? Candy. Want the best-made, and don't want a meter? Crushi. Already on Secrets? Wait a month and see.
What's not on the list, and why
ReelShort, DramaBox and the human-actor apps. Different product. Real actors, no chat afterward, and a subscription model that makes Candy's tokens look gentle.
Where this is going
Two predictions, and they're not hard.
Every serious companion app will have this by next summer. It's the cheapest way to make an app feel alive — content arriving on a schedule, without building a world. Crushi built Episodes. Candy built Shorts. Secrets built Secret Shorts in a month. GoLove and JOI won't be far behind.
The human-actor drama apps are the real competition, and they don't know it yet. ReelShort and DramaBox have the format nailed and the budgets to match. What they can't do is let you message the lead afterwards. That's the whole moat, and it's why the AI versions will win the adult end of this outright.
The honest caveat: it's early. The writing is pulp. The episodes are a minute. If you want prestige, this isn't it. If you want a cliffhanger you can text… it is.
Five habits that make the free episodes go further
Because most people treat it like TikTok and miss the point.
1. Watch the free ones before you subscribe anywhere. Three on Candy, the uncrowned ones on Crushi, the first on Secrets. That's a real sample. Nobody's hiding the quality.
2. Pick by tag, not by thumbnail. The thumbnails all look the same. The tag tells you the plot.
3. Open the chat straight after the cliffhanger. That's the moment the format is built for. She's the character, the scene's still warm, and you get to write episode four yourself.
4. On Candy, budget the tokens. Every paid episode is drawing from the same 100 that video and calls use. Decide what the month is for.
5. On Crushi, go find her afterwards. The episodes are set somewhere. The City is that somewhere. Night mode, the right district — she's there.
A chat opener that works after an episode: “That last line. The one before it cut. Finish it.”
