Most Promptchan reviews describe the gallery. The gallery is not the point.

Promptchan publishes a full public API, and reading it tells you exactly what the generator does. Here's the whole control set, and it's the most complete one in this category.

The styles, filters and emotions

On “XL 2” versus “XL+”. You'll see both on gallery cards and nobody explains them. There's no “XL 2” value in the API — but there is Hyperreal XL+ v2 and Photo XL+ v2. The reasonable reading is that XL+ is the newer model family and the “2” on a card is shorthand for its v2 checkpoint. That's inference, not documentation, and I'd rather tell you that than pretend.

Thirty-nine filters sit on top of the styles — Cinematic, Studio, Flash, Analog, Polaroid, Vintage, Manga, Cyberpunk, VHS, Pixel XL, Comic XL, Retro Porn XL, Fire Style XL, Hyper, 3D, Sketch, Watercolor, Lineart, Moody, Oil Painting, Noir Movie and more.

Twelve emotions: Default, Upset, Disgusted, Scared, Winking, Angry, Smiling, Laughing, Ouch, Shocked, Orgasm Face, Stick out Tongue.

That's a genuinely large surface. Seventeen styles times thirty-nine filters is a lot of looks before you've written a word.

The quality tiers, and what they really cost

This trips everyone up, because the names on the gallery cards don't match the names in the generator.

The real quality tiers are Ultra, Extreme and Max. Here's what each costs:

“One Gem equals one image generation” is the base rule and it's clean. Everything else is a surcharge on top of it.

⚠️ The peak surcharge is worth noticing. Up to a quarter of a Gem extra during busy periods, applied silently. On a 100-Gem monthly allowance that's a few free images a month evaporating into demand pricing.

And here's the resolution problem. The API caps output at 512×512, 512×768 or 768×512. That's it. Three sizes, none above 768 pixels on the long edge.

So Max quality costs three Gems and still lands at 768×512. Upscaling exists on Pro, but the target resolution isn't published.

For comparison: Secrets AI does 1.5K and 2K. Lovescape does 4K video. Promptchan is producing images at roughly the size a 2022 model produced them.

Is that fatal? No — for chat avatars, phone wallpapers and gallery browsing it's perfectly fine, and the control set partly makes up for it. But if you wanted to print something, or crop in, you can't.

The prompt workshop

Right. Since this is the most controllable generator in the category, let's actually teach it.

The syntax is plain language, not tags. No (word:1.2) weighting. The one emphasis mechanism documented is double parentheses: ((red)) dress pushes the colour harder.

The prompt shape their own guide prescribes, in order:

Subject → Setting → Style → Medium → Colour palette → Mood → Detail level

And the camera angles genuinely bind. There are 29 documented terms that the model actually responds to — Extreme Close-Up, Medium Close-Up, Cowboy Shot, Upper Body Shot, Overhead Shot, Bird's Eye View, Low View, Worm's Eye View, Selfie, From Behind, Fisheye View, Macro View and the rest. Naming one is the fastest way to fix a composition.

Five prompts that work

1. The bedroom, warm and slow. Style Hyperreal XL+, creativity 30, detail 0.5.

The negative prompt you should just save

You've got 250 characters. Spend them on failure modes, not on wishes.

That's 195 characters. The remaining 55 go on whatever this particular model keeps getting wrong for you.

Five habits that save Gems

The gallery, and the clone button

One feature I haven't seen covered properly anywhere, and it's the fastest way to get good here.

The Explore feed holds what the community has made — they claim over 20 million images and videos. Sort by Top, Newest, Video or Following.

Every public image has a clone button. Press it and you inherit the whole generation: the prompt, the style, the filter, the sliders, the lot. Then you change one thing and run it again.

That is a genuinely brilliant learning loop. Instead of guessing why someone's image looks better than yours, you take theirs apart and rebuild it. Find a look you like, clone it, swap the filter, clone it again, change the camera angle. Half an hour of that teaches you more than any guide.

The trade you're making is the licence. Public mode is what powers this — you grant Promptchan and other users a perpetual licence, which is exactly how your work ends up cloneable too. Private mode keeps everything yours and keeps it out of the feed.

💡 How I'd actually use it: generate in public mode while you're learning, cloning freely and being cloned. Switch to private once you're making things you care about. The toggle is per-generation, so you can move between the two whenever you like.

One caveat. Clones inherit the prompt but not the seed of a face you didn't create. So you can copy someone's lighting and composition exactly and still get a different woman. That's the correct behaviour, and it's worth knowing before you wonder why.

Video

It exists, it's Pro-tier for the good version, and it's underdocumented.

What's confirmed: portrait, landscape or square. Audio is optional and off by default — there's a toggle. Ten styles available. Both text-to-video and image-to-video work. Pro gets “Full-Length Videos + Extend”, where Extend continues an existing clip into a longer one.

What isn't published: duration, resolution, per-clip Gem cost, or the model behind it. Their own guide says only that a clip costs “a handful of gems… with a little more for higher quality, added sound, or a character in the shot.”

Their advertising has quoted 15 Gems for a Max-quality clip. I'd treat that as advertised rather than confirmed.

That's a real gap. You cannot plan a video session here.

The AI girlfriend chat

The newer half of the product, and it's decent rather than remarkable.

⚠️ Memory is the weak spot, and the API gives it away. The chat endpoint takes the full conversation history as an input parameter. That means memory is context window, not a retrieval store. There's no memory panel, no pinning, no summarisation described anywhere. Once the window fills, things drop off and don't come back.

Against SpicyChat‘s pinnable memories or Secrets AI's editable memory panel, that's a real gap.

Promptchan Pricing: The Gem Trap

💡 Do the per-image maths, because the tiers are not evenly priced.

Plus is bad value and Premium is where the curve bends. Two and a half times the price of Plus for four times the Gems. If you're paying at all, start at Premium.

Trust, refunds and the licence — 6.8 🔒

Some genuinely good news here, and one real gap.

The company is named. VisionAI Labs Limited, registered in Dublin, Ireland. Governed by Irish law, with disputes going to Irish courts. No arbitration clause and no class-action waiver — which, after reading JOI‘s LCIA-in-London clause and Muah's “the laws of United States”, is a pleasant surprise.

The refund policy is the most generous in this category. Thirty days from purchase, provided you haven't used the service significantly, cancel first to qualify, target seven business days, back to the original payment method. Annual plans get the same 30-day window measured from each charge, including renewals.

Crypto payments are final and non-refundable. Fair enough.

The content licence is the best I've read all series, and it's worth spelling out:

Compare that to SpicyChat taking perpetual transferable rights over your chat logs, or JOI claiming exclusive rights to characters you build. Promptchan gives you an actual choice, and the private side of it is clean.

Moderation bans AI-generated child sexual abuse material, non-consensual deepfakes and intimate imagery, bestiality and extreme violence. Prompts, outputs and uploads are scanned at creation, with human review of flagged material and a stated 48-hour takedown target.

⚠️ The gap: there is no 2257 compliance statement. Not in the terms, not in the moderation policy, not anywhere. Most adult generators publish one even when claiming exemption for synthetic content. JOI publishes one. Lovescape publishes one. This doesn't.

⚠️ And the age gate is a click-through. No ID check, no facial estimation, in any jurisdiction. SpicyChat and JOI both do real verification in regulated markets. This doesn't.

The privacy policy is dated June 2024 while the refund policy was updated this month — so the document that matters most for your data is the stalest one on the site. No retention period is stated. Named third parties are PostHog, Google Analytics and Google Ads.

The Statement Test — unresolved. No payment processor is named on any public page, and no descriptor is published. Checkout is behind a login. Card and crypto both work.

Apps, API and the community

There is no mobile app. The old one is discontinued — their own former app domain now serves a notice saying so and directs you to the browser.

Their paywall still lists “Web, iOS and Android” under what every plan includes. That's a checkable inaccuracy on the page where you hand over money, and it should be fixed.

The API is real and unusually open. Version 1.21, key-based, and it consumes the same Gems as the app — one Gem per image, same surcharges. A Pro subscription is effectively required to get a key. There's no separate API tariff, which is refreshingly simple.

The affiliate deal is 60% on the first payment, then 50% of the next four — five payments deep, not lifetime. Paid monthly by Wise, bank transfer or crypto.

Trustpilot: 4.3 out of 5 from 208 reviews — the highest score in this entire set of reviews.

I'll add the caveat honestly: the five-star reviews are conspicuously short one-liners (“Very nice app”, “Its Hot and sexy”), and the distribution is a barbell — 68% five-star against 8% one-star with almost nothing in between. A third-party reviewer has alleged Promptchan rewards Gems for leaving reviews. I could not find any first-party confirmation of that offer, so treat it as an allegation, not a fact. But read the score with the shape of it in mind.

The old “scam” thread, dated properly. There's a Reddit thread from July 2023 where a user says

It's a scam. I have made an account, bought gems, bought premium for a month. After that one month expired i was unable to see my created…”

That's a complaint about losing access to previously created content when a subscription lapsed — not fraudulent billing. It's three years old, it predates the current tier structure, the API, video, and today's 30-day refund policy. It still ranks on page one for the brand, which is why I'm addressing it rather than ignoring it.

More current criticism is about filtering: a thread from April 2026 opens “I was looking to see if anybody had good alternatives to Promptchan for creating images since their censorship has been getting…” That's the recurring theme now — creeping restriction on a product sold as no-filter.

Promptchan vs the field

Against OurDream. The closest match, and the fight is control versus output. OurDream has real weighting syntax and pays creators cash. Promptchan has seeds, more styles and a far better refund policy. OurDream produces the better picture; Promptchan gives you more ways to aim.

Against Secrets AI. Secrets wins on resolution, price per image and chat quality by some distance. Promptchan wins on control and ownership. If you want to make things, Promptchan. If you want to talk, Secrets.

Against Lovescape. Lovescape does 30-second clips with sound and chips that never expire, at a third of the entry price. Promptchan's stills are more controllable. Different jobs.

Promptchan FAQs

Verdict

Promptchan is a workshop with a small window.

The workshop is excellent. Seeds, a real negative prompt, a creativity dial with documented settings, seventeen styles, thirty-nine filters, twelve emotions, twenty-nine camera angles that genuinely bind, and body sliders with a hard floor at eighteen.

Every bit of it is documented in a public API you can read before you pay a penny. For someone learning how these models actually respond, there is nothing better in this category to learn on.

Wrap that in an Irish company, a thirty-day refund policy and a private mode where you own your output with no strings attached, and the trust picture is better than most of its rivals manage.

The window is 768×512. Three Gems for Max quality still lands at 768×512. Everything you make here is small, and if you ever want to crop in or print, you can't.

So the recommendation is narrow and honest. Start on Premium at $23.99 — Plus is bad value at 15¢ an image and Premium is 6¢. Learn the seed. Save the negative prompt. Generate off-peak. Keep private mode on so it stays yours.

If the picture size matters more than the control, Secrets AI at 7.9 gives you 2K at under six cents. If you want fine control and a bigger output, OurDream at 8.0 is the better tool and pays its creators as well.

But if you want to actually understand what you're doing when you write a prompt, this is where to learn it.
