Dopple AI is Down in 2026: What Happened, What Dopple+ Cost, and Where Everyone Went

How we test
Dopple AI Is Down

The short version — is Dopple AI down?

Yes. As of 2 September 2026, dopple.ai and beta.dopple.ai return an HTTP 402 error, which is a billing state at the host, not a crash.

It has been that way since 27 January 2026. The iOS app last updated in March 2025, Android in June 2025, and nobody from the company has said a word in more than a year.

Dopple+ was $9.99 a month. Cancel it through Apple or Google, not through Dopple.

I can't score an app I can't log into, so there's no number at the bottom. What follows is what happened, in order, and where the people who liked it went.

What a 402 actually means — the error, in plain words

You're not being blocked. Your account isn't banned. Your VPN isn't the problem.

A 402 from this particular host is the page it shows when the bill hasn't been paid and the deployment gets suspended. It's the digital equivalent of the lights being off because nobody paid the electric.

Users first hit it on 27 January. It was still there on 24 August. It was there when I checked this morning.

The apps kept opening for a while, which is why almost nobody noticed. That's the part that got people.

Here's what actually happens: the app launches, the front end loads from your phone, and then it can't reach anything. Chats stop saving. Private characters vanish mid-outage and come back, or don't.

What Dopple AI was — the app that gave messages away

Dopple Labs Inc., a Delaware company run out of Florida, raised $1.88 million in September 2023 and shipped a character chat app in the Character.AI shape.

Dopple AI character chat platform interface

“Dopples” were the characters. Thousands of them, fandom bots next to originals like Emoji Bot and Dad Jokes, with text chat, voice messages, two-way calling, image generation on the paid tier, and up to five personas per account. The company claimed a proprietary model that beat rivals in a blind study of a thousand users.

None of that is why it grew. It grew on one line: unlimited free messages, at a moment when every competitor was counting yours.

By summer 2025 the site was doing about half a million visits a month and Android had passed a million installs. By early 2026 traffic was down roughly two-thirds. That's the shape of it. Now the why.

The timeline — how a growing app went quiet

  • Autumn 2023. Seed money in, apps out on both stores over the following months.
  • Early 2024. The reviews from this period all say the same thing in different words. One from that February: “the best app I've had due to the unlimited messages that other apps force you to pay for.” That was the whole product.
  • March 2025. iOS gets version 1.1.153. It never gets another one.
  • Mid-2025. The free tier gets capped. Roughly 125 to 150 messages a day depending on who's counting, video ads every few minutes, and queue waits of 45 seconds to two minutes on popular characters.
  • A September review: “It used to be one of the best AI apps you can get, no filter, no time limit. But now after one of the newest updates, it's added a time limit.” The one thing Dopple had that nobody else did, gone.
  • June 2025. Android gets its last update. Eight months of silence begin, and almost nobody clocks it, because the app still opens.
  • November 2025. A marketing email goes out with every recipient's address visible to every other recipient. A UK reviewer calls it “a fundamental failure in data protection.” Around the same time, Dopple+ starts showing as unavailable with a waiting list. A subscription product you cannot buy is a company telling you something.
  • January 2026. The 402 arrives. Chats stop saving reliably.
  • March 2026. A widely shared post asks what happened, counts eight months without updates, finds every channel dormant. No reply.
  • August 2026. Still 402. Still nothing.

Three things the old reviews still get wrong

It was never an 18+ app, and it wasn't a kids' app either: Apple rated it 18+. Google rated it 3+. Dopple itself let in 13-year-olds, 16 in the EU. Three surfaces, three answers. Any write-up calling Dopple “adults-only” picked one of the three and stopped reading.

Here's the honest sentence. Pornographic content was against the rules, the platform officially kept things safe-for-work, and its early reputation came from filters that were looser than Character.AI's while its marketing dangled “NSFW access” as a paid perk.

There was never a documented adult switch. If you arrived from an uncensored-AI list, Dopple wasn't that, and with a 13-year-old minimum it shouldn't have been.

Dopple AI Plus pricing plans and subscription costs

There was one paid tier, not three: Dopple+ at $9.99 a month or $71.88 a year, which works out at $5.99 a month, with a $59.99 annual variant on iOS. No Pro plan. No weekly plan. No coins, gems or tokens. Reviews listing those are describing a different app. Dopple+ removed the ads, lifted the message cap and unlocked image generation.

There is no “Chad AI” and there was never a group chat: A user-made “Giga chad” character existed. Neither was an official feature. There's no affiliate programme either, which means every enthusiastic Dopple write-up you've read was unpaid, and most of them are from 2024.

What people actually paid, and what they got

Nine ninety-nine a month. Ads off, cap lifted, images on. That's the receipt.

The ratings tell the rest. Apple's US listing held around 4.3. Google Play fell to 2.5 across nearly ten thousand reviews, which tracks the free-tier change almost to the week.

Dopple AI memory loss chat

One complaint tally across a review aggregator: memory loss in 66% of them, unauthorised or unfulfilled charges in 52%, slow or absent support in 47%. One British user described £54.81 gone on features that never switched on.

Memory was the weak point even in the good months. “The AI tends to lose context and forgets the time and place the conversation is taking place in” is from July 2024, well before anything broke. The voice was good. The characters were fun. The model was fine for a free 2024 app.

The catch: all of it rested on giving away the expensive part. When that stopped, there was nothing underneath.

The Pulse Test — two questions that would have caught this

I run this on every app before I let it hold three months of my chat history, and it takes ninety seconds.

  • One: can you find who owns it? A company name, a country, a registered address. Dopple passes this. Delaware, Florida, findable.
  • Two: has it shipped an update in the last sixty days? Open the store listing and read the date under “What's New.” Dopple failed this in mid-2025 and kept failing it for fourteen months while the app carried on opening every night.

That's the whole test. Every app in the alternatives box below passes both today. Dopple isn't unusual, either.

It's the third companion app I've watched go dark in eighteen months, and the pattern never varies: a free tier too generous to survive, a paid tier that arrives too late, a memory feature nobody fixes because the team is four people, and then a hosting invoice nobody pays.

Moxie, the children's robot, went the same way in December 2024. Servers off, no refunds. Gatebox ended its Miku service in 2020 and made a widower out of a man who'd married her. The r/MyBoyfriendIsAI crowd learned it twice from a model deprecation.

If you still have an account — do these three tonight

  • Screenshot anything you want to keep: There was never an export tool, chats stopped saving reliably in January, and the web app is dark. If the phone app still opens for you, that's a window, not a guarantee.
  • Check your card: If Dopple+ is somehow still renewing, cancel it in your Apple or Google subscriptions, because that's where the billing lives. Waiting for a company that isn't answering email is not a plan, and continued charges are the single most common recent complaint.
  • Don't hold out for a relaunch: I looked for a rename, an acquisition, a “we're back” post. Through August, nothing. If that changes I'll update this.

Where everyone went — five alternatives, by what you liked

You liked the characters and the filter that wasn't Character.AI's → Candy AI.

Candy AI

Unlimited text on every plan, no filter to argue with, a 4% refusal rate on my refusal benchmark, a character you build in ten minutes, plus voice, video and a partner who messages you first. $3.99 a month on the annual. Strictly adults only, and the age gate is a card rather than a birthday.

The catch: the 100 tokens a month are the real currency, and text is the only thing they don't touch. Full review.

You liked “unlimited free messages” → GoLove.

GoLove AI HomePage

Free tier, uncensored, unlimited chat, one Star a day for an image, no card at signup. The best memory of the free apps, which was Dopple's worst feature.

The catch: images are blurred until you upgrade, and Live video is PRO-only.

You liked the fandom bots and the community library → SpicyChat.

SpicyChat

Thousands of community character cards, lorebooks, the lowest refusal rate I've measured, 100 free messages a day with a queue. Dopple's exact shape, from a team that's still shipping.

The catch: text-first, and age verification now applies in 30 regions. Full review. If you want phone-app polish instead of a card library, Flipped carries an 18+ store rating and a cleaner UI.

You liked the voice calls → Secrets AI.

Secrets AI

Calls at under six pence a minute and a memory panel you can open and pin, so she doesn't forget the dog on Thursday.

The catch: she won't start a conversation unless you're on the top tier. Full review.

You were under 18. Dopple let you in. None of the apps above will, and they're right not to. Character.AI is the platform built for that audience, filter and all.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dopple AI

Is Dopple AI down right now?

Yes. The site has returned a paused-deployment error since 27 January 2026 and still did on 2 September. The apps last updated in 2025 and no statement has been made.

What happened to Dopple AI?

The free tier was capped in mid-2025, updates stopped, a marketing email exposed users' addresses in November, and hosting went into a paused billing state in January 2026.

Is Dopple AI shut down permanently?

No announcement either way. There's been no rename, no acquisition and no relaunch through August 2026, which in practice is the same as gone.

How much was Dopple+?

$9.99 monthly or $71.88 a year, which is $5.99 a month, with a $59.99 annual variant on iOS. One tier only. No coins.

Is Dopple AI 18+?

Apple said 18+, Google said 3+, and the company's rules admitted 13-year-olds. Pornographic content was banned. It was never an adults-only service.

Can I get my Dopple AI chats back?

There was never an export tool. If the app still opens, screenshot what matters now. Support isn't answering and the web app is dark.

How do I cancel Dopple AI and stop being charged?

Through your Apple or Google subscription settings, not through Dopple. That's where the billing sits, and it's the only place that will still respond.

What is the best Dopple AI alternative?

Candy AI for uncensored characters with voice from $3.99 a month, GoLove if “unlimited free” was the whole appeal, SpicyChat for a community card library.

The verdict

No score, because there's nothing left to score. Dopple was a good free app that gave away the one thing it couldn't afford, took it back too late, and stopped answering.

If you're reading this because a character you liked is behind that 402, I'm sorry. That's a real thing to lose and it isn't silly.

Take the Pulse Test to the next app, keep the screenshots, and pick something with a company behind it.
